Tooth Extraction

An impacted tooth can be harmful to the gums and the other surrounding teeth. While dentists try to save the tooth/teeth if they can, with treatments, at times, tooth extraction may be the only way to resolve the problem. In tooth extraction, tooth is removed from its socket in the bone. This dental procedure generally requires administering anaesthesia in patients to minimise the pain.

Why is Tooth Extraction Required?

Our dentists at Smile Crew always attempt to save the natural teeth of the patients. However, there are times when restorative methods do not work. It is only when the tooth has been impacted, past the point of repair, that our dentists recommend a tooth extraction. Some instances when tooth extraction is suggested by our dentists are as below:
=

Crowded teeth

=

Impacted wisdom tooth

=

A fractured tooth that cannot be repaired

=

Severe tooth decay because of cavities

=

Dental injuries like tooth luxation (when ligaments, bone, and tissues holding the tooth in place are disrupted because of an accident or trauma)

=

Severe gum disease

What Happens Before a Tooth Extraction?

What Happens Before a Tooth Extraction?
During your consultation session, our skilled dentist assesses the condition of your tooth and the surrounding gums. Some x-rays are also taken of the affected area to determine the bone levels and extent of the damage. Patients must inform the dentist about their medical history, health conditions, medication, and allergies during this consultation session to plan the treatment process accordingly. Giving them prior information about your medication etc., helps them decide the best sedation for you.

What Happens in the Process of Tooth Extraction?

What Happens in the Process of Tooth Extraction?
Once our dentist approves of tooth extraction, the tooth area is prepared for the process. Most patients are given local anaesthesia (unless our dentist suggests a different type of sedation) to numb the area in which the affected is present. After confirming with the patient whether or not they are feeling anything in the area, the dentist then proceeds to extract the tooth. The affected tooth is slowly loosened from its socket with the help of special dental instruments (sanitised).

If the impacted tooth has broken off at the gum line or is severely decayed, they may have to make an incision in the gums to get proper access to the tooth. Once the tooth is extracted, the empty socket is disinfected and cleaned. If required, the dentist will place a dental bone graft in this socket which helps in the prevention of bone loss from the jaw. If required, the area is stitched to boost the healing process.

Once the tooth extraction procedure is over, our dentist places a piece of clean gauze over the area of extraction and asks you to hold it down firmly to slow down the bleeding and quick formation of a clot. Getting blood clots in the area is a good sign; it means the area is healing. It also reduces the risk of dry sockets post the extraction process. Patients may experience mild bleeding for up to 24 hours after the tooth extraction.

Why Should We Undergo a Tooth Extraction Process?

Why Should We Undergo a Tooth Extraction Process?
As discussed earlier, tooth extraction is suggested by our dentists only when they think that the tooth cannot be saved and/or dental restorations will not work. If the impacted tooth is left in its place, it may cause several other dental issues. A single tooth will infect the surrounding gums and teeth, causing pain, discomfort, and decay. It is best that you remove the affected tooth so you can avoid more complicated forms of oral issues in the future.
